There is a tribe in Africa where the birth date of a child is counted not from when they were born, nor from when they are conceived but from the day that the child was a thought in its mother’s mind. And when a woman decides that she will have a child, she goes off and sits under a tree, by herself, and she listens until she can hear the song of the child that wants to come. And after she’s heard the song of this child, she comes back to the man who will be the child’s father, and teaches it to him. And then, when they make love to physically conceive the child, some of that time they sing the song of the child, as a way to invite it.

And then, when the mother is pregnant, the mother teaches that child’s song to the midwives and the old women of the village, so that when the child is born, the old women and the people around her sing the child’s song to welcome it. And then, as the child grows up, the other villagers are taught the child’s song. If the child falls, or hurts its knee, someone picks it up and sings its song to it. Or perhaps the child does something wonderful, or goes through the rites of puberty, then as a way of honoring this person, the people of the village sing his or her song.

In the African tribe there is one other occasion upon which the villagers sing to the child. If at any time during his or her life, the person commits a crime or aberrant social act, the individual is called to the center of the village and the people in the community form a circle around them. Then they sing their song to them.

The tribe recognizes that the correction for antisocial behavior is not punishment; it is love and the remembrance of identity. When you recognize your own song, you have no desire or need to do anything that would hurt another.

And it goes this way through their life. In marriage, the songs are sung, together. And finally, when this child is lying in bed, ready to die, all the villagers know his or her song, and they sing—for the last time—the song to that person.

You may not have grown up in an African tribe that sings your song to you at crucial life transitions, but life is always reminding you when you are in tune with yourself and when you are not. When you feel good, what you are doing matches your song, and when you feel awful, it doesn’t. In the end, we shall all recognize our song and sing it well. You may feel a little warbly at the moment, but so have all the great singers. Just keep singing and you’ll find your way home.

Yay freedom of speech. Looks like we’re all free to say what we want to without being harassed; unless what we say is awful and unpopular, then we can be thrown into holding cells and have our names blacklisted in the neighboring areas.

If they had done something that was illegal by definition, that would be different. But *if* their only crime was upsetting people, this kind of treatment is ridiculous and unacceptable. Would you like to have been treated this way standing up for the civil liberties of minorities? Not so long ago you might have, and for the same reason - people didn’t want to hear what you had to say.

These guys will never be on the “right side of history” but as American citizens they don’t HAVE to be to express themselves. They are bigoted and misguided, but they are still people. I hope this is still a “free” country.

Dude, usually I really look up to your opinions but this one makes me wary. Are you aware of what they do? The grief and mental suffering they put people through? They harass and attack people verbally. Sure, they don’t life a finger, but you and I both know that’s not the only way to hurt people. A police officer would arrest someone who was threatening to hit someone, so why not arrest them for attempting to do all this?

There’s a difference between freedom of speech and a hate crime.

It’s not against the law to hurt someone’s feelings. And as a society we can’t treat it like it is and pretend we have “free speech”.

How many atheists verbally attack christians? How many christians verbally attack homosexuals? Are we going to throw everyone who hurts our feelings into a holding cell and blast their faces to shame them at every turn?

This is harassment. This is TEXTBOOK harassment. No one is disputing that these people are ignorant, hateful and utterly stupid. But rallying in places where you’re not necessarily wanted is NOT a hate crime. It’s -shitty-, it’s -insensitive-, but you are playing fast and loose with that term, and if it WAS a hate crime, they’d be charged with it.

They were charged with nothing because under the law they have not committed a crime. For them to be subjected to ANY form of imprisonment REGARDLESS of how tasteless their words are is not just unconstitutional, it’s downright unethical.

It’s fucking terrible that people like this exist, but to have the judicial system exploited to silence and shame people we hate is inviting some dangerous hysteria into the legal system. And as well-adjusted, reasonable adults we eventually have to accept that some people are awful fucks and they will say awful shit, and what they say DOESN’T MATTER.

If they commit an actual crime then they should be put through the legal system in accordance with the statutes, that’s what it boils down to. Because if we have citizens interpreting and enforcing their own idea of what SHOULD be the law, where does that end? Are we pretending that this kind of repercussion will be exclusive only to those the majority deem “deserve it”? Doesn’t seem too far from police brutality or racial profiling. Even when they catch someone who’s guilty with that shit - it’s the wrong way to enforce the law. It’s the wrong way to treat citizens of the United States.

HOLY SHIT KEIKA THIS ISN”T ABOUT PEOPLE GETTING THEIR FEELINGS HURT. Do you really think this is about people crying boo hoo over some mean things someone said? Your disappreciation of the emotional security of people is outright riling. People aren’t WHINING, jesus christ, they’re being verbally abused, and there’s nothing your precious legal system can do about it.

Of course they can’t be charged with anything, because they make sure they don’t do anything wrong so they can continue to harass and vocally destroy the lives of people who are already emotionally vulnerable. So YES. OF COURSE people are going to take it into their own hands. Because the legal system protects little shits like this, and gives them the “right” to shout obscenities at a child’s funeral.

Yeah, well people have the right to defend themselves, and that’s what they’re doing. By any means possible, because the law sure isn’t. People like you sure aren’t. You’re more concerned with upholding the letter of the law rather than doing what the law is there for in the first place: to protect the people.

Laws change as people do, and this is a law that needs to be changed. But until it can be, we do what we need to to protect ourselves.

To be fair this sort of ‘process’ the police did is fairly standard to what happens at most major rallies and demonstrations. Hell during massive protests at ecnomic events it happens en masse.

Not saying its good, but the fact that WBC is getting a taste of this is AWESOME. Its fair. Its COMPLETELY fair. In fact its more fair they get this treatment than people who protest completely VALID causes. Gettingput in a cell for picketing funerals of good people and shouting hurtful and hateful comments and songs and chants that offend 99% of the population is totally fair. Completely fair. No laws are being broken here.

My question is: why aren’t they being charged? Isn’t there something like Disturbing the Peace or something. I know that law in Canada means if your making a noise noise that disrupts peoples daily lives you could be charged. Or like Disorderly Conduct or something (which Wiki states being

“A person who recklessly, knowingly, or intentionally:

(1) engages in fighting or in tumultuous conduct;

(2) makes unreasonable noise and continues to do so after being asked to stop; or

(3) disrupts a lawful assembly of persons”

In this case I would believe them to be disrupting a lawful assembly). It’s wrong what they do, and they should be held accountable under the law.
